Osamu Tezuka's "Buddha" manga

Another classic I managed to stumble upon - the biggest opuses and some cult classics and such of the Grandfather of Manga had been translated in french (and probably italian) yeah, but even then it was chaotically licensed around, and english versions are even harder to find. Like this one.

Here is a less known classic of him - his 'biography/hagiography' of the Prince of the Saka, a man called later... The Buddha, the Enlighted one. "Jesus of the East", a reformer of the Dharma.

An example of the Master's great interest into playing serious, deep tales as well, complex things - he paints us his version of the tale, using some characters as to point ideas as well, history and debates. Was the Master a secular artist, or a devout Buddhist in his personal life, it was debated still. But this tale show a respect for this grand spiritual figure of Asia...

The time is several millennia ago; the place is India. Droughts and famine plague the country, and its people are forced into a strict caste system that rewards only the elite cream of the crop. Across the land animals and Brahmin alike rejoice, for the blessed child with a birthright to become a god is about to be born. His name is Siddhartha Gautama, later to be known as the Buddha. However, Siddhartha s life will not be an easy one. He will experience love and loss, learn about the value of life and influence the lives of many, including Tatta and Pariah, Bandaka the bandit and countless others. The complete biography of Buddha, as seen by Osamu Tezuka. Received the Bungei Shunju Manga Award in 1975 and ended in 1984.

(Ongoing, some Maturity)

(It is fitting even more as rumors speak of an *anime adaptation*, trilogy of OAVs or movies -there was one or two teasers or spoilers I vaguely remember...)

To escape the world I've got to enjoy that simple dance. And it seemed that everything was on my side...

One I watched recently is the anime movie based/inspired by Tezuka's manga version of Metropolis (inspired by the classic silent movie in some degree), 2000 or so I think. It was... great.
